Conemaugh Township senior wins bid for seat on school board

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — One Somerset County teenager has earned a bid to represent his fellow students on his local school district's school board. Conemaugh Township senior Ethan Phillippi, who turned 18 just days before Tuesday's municipal primary election, was one of five individuals who won the bid on both the Republican and Democratic tickets. When we first met Ethan last month, he told us that he's the youngest person to run for their school board and one of the youngest to run in Pennsylvania.

May 31 was the 129th anniversary of the Johnstown flood of 1889, which killed more than 2,000 people. Every year, the Johnstown National Flood Memorial remembers the people who lost their lives in the flood. Kayak rentals, multi-use pavilion coming soon

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Visitors to Somerset Lake will see more work being done to a trail that will eventually loop the entire way around the waterway. Phase 2-B construction is beginning for a quarter mile piece of trail from the main parking area to the main boat launch along the water line, and back up through the woods to Wood Duck Road. County planning officials say there is also clearing taking place on the grounds above the trail for the future site of a multi-use pavilion.

Bills name former Pitt quarterback Nathan Peterman the starter for season opener

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have named Nathan Peterman their starting quarterback in a job the second-year player is expected to hold until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is deemed ready. Police investigating string of graffiti incidents in Somerset Borough

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Somerset Borough police say they are investigating a string of alleged vandalism incidents involving graffiti. Police say all of the incidents reportedly occurred during the overnight hours of Feb. 20 into Feb. 21. Authorities say the unknown suspect(s) spray painted various markings at several public and residential buildings, businesses and other properties within Somerset Borough's uptown district. Police are asking residents and those who work in the area to check any surveillance cameras for any potential footage of the incidents.

Tennessee governor signs bill criminalizing adults who help minors get abortions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Governor Bill Lee signed the so-called "abortion trafficking" act into law on Tuesday. The new law makes it a crime for any adult to recruit, harbor or transport a minor to abort a child or to obtain abortion chemicals for an underage individual without the consent of their parents. Violation of this law is a Class A misdemeanor with mandatory jail time of 11 months and 29 days.

Validity of nearly 100 mail-in ballots questioned in Centre County post-primary election

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Nearly two weeks after the recent primary election, close to 100 mail-in ballots in Centre County are being challenged as to whether they are valid ballots that should be counted. Election officials say 98 mail-in ballots were initially counted as valid by Centre County's election board, but they remain under review. The issue is how the returned ballots were dated, or not dated. On election day, the county's primary count center noted possible problems with how the ballots’ outer envelopes were dated.
