Local McDonald's owner donates $11K to charity

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — The owner and operator of 15 regional McDonald’s restaurants presented a check to the Ronald McDonald house for over $11,000 Thursday. Owner Joe Nyanko presented a check to the president of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Penn at the East Plank Road location in Altoona. The money raised came from a campaign held earlier this year where ten cents from each Minute Maid frozen slushie sold in central Pennsylvania was set aside.

West Virginia grandparents charged with neglect after teen found in 'skeletal state'

Altoona, PA (WJAC) — Authorities say clean up crews are on scene of a reported train derailment that occurred overnight in Altoona at one of the Norfolk Southern railyards. According to a post from Altoona firefighters, emergency officials were notified of the derailment around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officials say the derailment is "visible" from the North 8th Street bridge. Emergency officials say there is no danger to the public and officials from Norfolk Southern say no injuries were reported.

Ridgway woman charged in inmate's fatal overdose

Elk County, PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Ridgway Borough Police Department say an Elk County woman is facing charges, accused of providing the drugs to an inmate, at the Elk County Jail, who fatally overdosed earlier this year. Police say on January 15th, authorities responded to the jail for a report of an unresponsive female inmate. Authorities say the woman, identified as 31-year-old Stevie Mann, was found in her cell and was later pronounced dead by the Elk County Coroner's Office.

Teen lifeguard dies after accident off NJ shore beach

CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a teenage lifeguard was killed in an accident off a New Jersey shore beach. The Cape May city government said Saturday that 16-year-old Norman Inferrera III died after an accident Thursday off the Reading Avenue beach. Officials said that current information indicates that Inferrera was rowing a lifeguard boat that was broadsided by a wave and flipped over, knocking him unconscious. Fellow lifeguards responded immediately, and he was flown to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, where he died Friday night, officials said.
