Cambria County, PA — A family is heartbroken and a judge is furious following the preliminary hearing for Michael Lyles Jr. He is accused of shooting and killing 38-year-old Candace Mervin in a Hornerstown home. The preliminary hearing for Lyles took place at the Cambria county central park complex. He is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and child endangerment. The defendant was heard by judge Kevin Price, in Johnstown.

Biden releasing 1M barrels of gasoline from Northeast reserve in bid to lower prices

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Tuesday that it is releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from a Northeast reserve established after Superstorm Sandy in a bid to lower prices at the pump this summer. The sale, from storage sites in Port Reading, New Jersey, and South Portland, Maine, will be allocated in increments of 100,000 barrels at a time. The approach will create a competitive bidding process that ensures gasoline can flow into local retailers ahead of the July 4 holiday and sold at competitive prices, the Energy Department said.

Former Steeler, Pitt-Johnstown wrestler Carlton Haselrig dies at 54, coroner says

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Johnstown native Carlton Haselrig, who’s a former Steeler and the most decorated athlete in Pitt-Johnstown history, passed away Wednesday at the age of 54. According to Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees, Haselrig died of natural causes. Haselrig wrestled for Johnstown High as an independent “one-man team” as a senior posting a 10-0 record and winning the Pennsylvania AAA State Heavyweight Title, according to Pitt-Johnstown Athletics. He continued his wrestling career at Pitt-Johnstown winning six heavyweight NCAA National Wrestling championships and setting five Pitt-Johnstown all-time wrestling records, according to the university.

Guardian Healthcare confirmed the case at their Mountain Laurel facility to 6 News via email Wednesday morning. "The safety of our residents and employees is, and always has been, our top priority,” they said. “We can confirm a case of COVID-19 at our Mountain Laurel facility in Clearfield. We are following all CDC, CMS and DOH guidance for health care facilities.

Punxsy man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting teen, will serve prison time, DA says

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Clearfield County say a Punxsutawney man has been sentenced to prison time after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a teenage girl last year. Officials say Hunter Vroman appeared in court this week where he was sentenced to serve 9 months to 5 years in state prison. Vroman was arrested last summer following an investigation into accusations that he had sexually assaulted a teenager at a residence in Clearfield Borough.

Cambria County nurses see major improvement in shortage since pandemic peak

Former Lackawanna Co. defense attorney sentenced for soliciting sex acts as legal payment

LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A former Lackawanna County defense attorney who pleaded guilty to soliciting sex acts for legal services has been sentenced. Corey Kolcharno was sentenced Thursday to four to 23 months in prison, followed by 2 years probation for providing legal services to female clients in exchange for sexual acts and materials. He had previously pleaded guilty to four felony counts of promoting prostitution. Kolcharno was also required to surrender his license to practice law as part of the plea agreement.

Migrant indicted over alleged rape of 15-year-old at Massachusetts shelter

WASHINGTON (TND) — A 26-year-old Haitian man arrested for aggravated rape of a 15-year-old in a migrant shelter was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday, according to a release from Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz. Cory Alvarez is charged with one count of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year age difference and one count of rape of a child by force. He is currently being held without bail and will be arraigned in Plymouth County Superior Court later this year.

Pirates trade Taillon to Yankees for 4 more prospects

Pittsburgh, Pa (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded away another fan favorite, sending pitcher Jameson Taillon to the New York Yankees in exchange for four prospects. Taillon will be reunited with former teammate Gerrit Cole. In return for Taillon, the Pirates will receive four players, including three of the Yankees' Top-20 prospects. Taillon was the Bucs Opening Day starter in 2019 but his season was cut short with an injury, which resulted in him having a second Tommy John surgery.
