Two injured in accident at Elk County paper mill, officials confirm

Elk County, PA (WJAC) — Officials with the Domtar Corporation in Johnsonburg have confirmed that two people were injured at their mill in Elk County last week. The company says the incident happened Thursday afternoon at their paper mill on Center Street. According to a company statement, two contractor employees were injured while working on a chip conveyor tunnel. Officials say the contractors were taken to the hospital and that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Altoona man sentenced to jail time, probation in assault case

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Blair County say an Altoona has been sentenced to jail time and probation after pleading guilty to physically and sexually assaulting a woman last year. Aaron Foster was arrested last June following a disturbance at a home along 3rd Ave. in the city of Altoona. Police say the woman stated that Foster "shoved her" and forced her into the bedroom of the home, where he proceeded to sexually assault her, following an altercation about a party that the two had attended.

Balance Restaurant to create main street plaza in Downtown Johnstown

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Balance Restaurant opened three years ago in Downtown Johnstown and in 2020 co-owners Amanda and Mike Artim took the chance to expand the business next door to the Old Mission Inn and created the Mission Inn Event Space. Now, Amanda and Mike plan to make a $1.2 Million investment to further grow the business. With an increased demand in catering and customers constantly filling the already expanded restaurant, Amanda and Mike have purchased the three adjacent buildings to the Mission Inn Event Space.

Blair County Prison on lockdown as dozens of inmates test positive for COVID-19: Officials

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Officials placed the Blair County Prison on lockdown Tuesday as the facility grapples with COVID-19 cases among inmates. Officials on the Blair County Prison Board say they were notified at 7:15 a.m. that Warden Abbie Tate placed the facility on lockdown status. They say the prison administration is enacting a modified “out of cell” schedule for inmates where it’s safe to do so. The Blair County Prison had 43 inmates who’d tested positive for the virus and 30 others are still waiting for results, officials say.

Former teacher charged with child rape arrested again

The former teacher in Tennessee who was accused of raping a child has been arrested again, less than three weeks later — this time for coercion of a witness, aggravated stalking, and harassment. Alissa McCommon, 38, was first arrested on Sept. 8. She bailed out and was not allowed to have any contact with the alleged victim, or any minors other than her own children. But Covington police say that’s not what happened.

PA Turnpike Commission approves increase in toll rates for 2022

PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has approved a 5% toll increase for both E-ZPass and toll by plate customers. That change is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 2, 2022 and will be for the entire system expect the Southern Beltway west of Pittsburg. Turnpike CEO Mark Compton says this rate increase is lower than normal, something customers should appreciate. Today’s action is the first time in six years that the rate of increase is under 6%.

Video shows suspect running over man twice with car, kissing and stabbing his body

HOUSTON (TND) — Shocking video obtained by a station in Texas shows a suspect running over a man twice and then kissing and stabbing his body. The Ring footage obtained by KTRK shows a man, who the station identified as Steven Anderson, walking down a street on May 3 to pick up his mail. A car then comes screeching into the frame and hits him. KTRK identified the driver of the vehicle as 20-year-old Karon Fisher.

Altoona police look to identify man after convenience store burglary

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Altoona police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man they say broke into a convenience store earlier this month and stole hundreds of dollars’ worth of CBD products. Police say the burglary happened at FeFi’s on 4th Street just before 3 a.m. Dec. 14. According to police, the man used a hammer to smash the store’s door before crawling inside. Police say he stole over $400 worth of CBD products from behind the counter.

The Biden administration rolled out a new rule aimed at speeding up the process for asylum claims at the border as President Joe Biden is facing pressure to slow down illegal crossings that have become a political headache for his reelection campaign. Thursday’s rule announced by the Department of Homeland Security would allow asylum officers to determine if a person seeking asylum presents a threat at an earlier stage in the process than current rules, which allow someone to continue in the asylum process even if they have a criminal history or pose a risk to national security.
