SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — The Somerset County Swiftwater Flood Response Team held demonstrations during the Somerset Night Out earlier this week. Volunteers show attendees what the team does and how to stay safe while out on the water. They also demonstrated how they use their equipment. One of the demonstrations featured K9 Ellie. Officials say she is able to find drowning victims by using the scent she picks up from the water.

Suspect in Pittsburgh shooting dead after 6-hour standoff with police

WASHINGTON (TND) — A man who opened fire at deputies when they tried to serve him an eviction notice at a home in Pennsylvania on Wednesday is dead following a six-hour standoff, according to authorities. “The subject in this incident was pronounced deceased by @PghEMS at 5:08 p.m. EST,” Pittsburgh Public Safety noted on social media. The suspect's identity wasn't immediately known. His cause of death was also unclear. The ordeal prompted several home evacuations after the suspect exchanged gunfire with police.

Drunk Pittsburgh man accused of crashing into camper, firing gun at Somerset Co. park

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County say a Pittsburgh man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed into an occupied camper and then began firing a rifle at Scottyland Park on Memorial Day. Police say troopers were dispatched to the park, located in Middlecreek Township, during the early morning hours of Memorial Day, for a report of an intoxicated man firing a gun. Troopers say when they arrived on scene, they observed a 2010 Lincoln Towncar that had crashed into a camper and golf cart on a private campsite.

Man charged with driving on abandoned section of PA Turnpike

FULTON COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A Cumberland County man has been charged with trying to take a ride through history. Pennsylvania State Police said Sunday that Ivan Fowler, 27, was charged Thursday with simple trespassing after someone told state police he posted pictures of himself cutting open a lock to an access gate for the abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and other photos showed him driving on the 13-mile stretch of road, which is now private property.

Woman killed following early morning, head-on crash on Somerset Pike

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees has identified the victim of an early morning, head-on crash on Somerset Pike. Lees says 58-year-old Margaret Holdsworth suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries in the crash. 911 officials say first responders were dispatched to the 2600 block of Somerset Pike, around 5:30 a.m. Monday, for the two-vehicle collision. Authorities with the Conemaugh Township Police Department say Holdsworth's vehicle crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck an oncoming vehicle.

World War II vet from Altoona recalls bombing experience

ALTOONA - "The Bridge on the River Kwai" -- the 1957 Academy Award-winning motion picture -- is a fictional story based on a book inspired by actual events. One 93-year-old veteran from Altoona played a role in the actual event during World War II. Clyde Saylor served in the Army Air National Guard when allied bombers destroyed the bridge in April 1945, delivering a blow to Japanese forces who were determined to advance their occupation of Thailand and Burma.

Amy Arcurio named Greater Johnstown superintendent

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new superintendent has been named in the Greater Johnstown School District. It's the first permanent superintendent since November 2016. It was a unanimous decision to appoint current Assistant Superintendent Amy Arcurio to the position. She replaces substitute Superintendent Frank Frontino. The Greater Johnstown School District has had substitute superintendents since November 2016, when then-Superintendent James Cekada went on paid sabbatical leave. After his retirement this summer, Frontino was appointed substitute superintendent and the Pennsylvania School Boards Association led the search for a permanent leader.

Meteorologist Caitlin Westerholm joined WJAC in March 2021 as the Weekend Meteorologist. Prior to moving to Johnstown, Caitlin worked as a Meteorologist at WBNG in Binghamton, NY while finishing up her degree at Millersville University. While at Millersville, she majored in Meteorology with a concentration in broadcast and minor in emergency management. She was also involved in Millersville's chapter of the American Meteorological Society, Millersville's student-run TV station, MUTV, Millersville's Campus Weather Service, and was the Executive Producer of Millersville's broadcast meteorology club, Weather Watch.
